A Letter from the Chairman

Chamber Members:

I want to begin by saying Thank you for your support of the Greater Shawnee Area Chamber of Commerce. Your support and involvement has made the Chamber the effective voice of the local business community to our local and state officials.I am honored to serve as the Chairman of the Greater Shawnee Area Chamber of Commerce for 2010.

As someone that was born and raised in Shawnee, I am looking forward to giving back to a community that has meant so much to me. My family has been a part of this community for five generations and I consider it a privilege to serve the community in this role. The opportunities in Shawnee that we all enjoy were made possible by the leaders that have come before us that shared a vision for growth in this community. I believe our charge this year is to continue that legacy of looking forward towards both the opportunities and the threats in front of our community and create a plan to tackle both. Our planning retreat this past fall focused on the forward planning that is occurring in our community and how the Chamber can be a part of it.

  • City of Shawnee – Brian McDougal and his staff have created a list of projects that will maintain services to our citizens and position our community for growth. Their next challenge will be prioritizing these projects and identifying funding sources. The Chamber will be involved in this dialogue.
  • Shawnee Schools – The School Board and outgoing Superintendent Marilyn Bradford are creating a long-range plan for the district. The Chamber will be supporting the creation of this plan and look for opportunities where we can be of assistance in improving our schools.
  • Many other businesses, institutions, and organizations are poised for growth in our community. The Chamber will be active in communicating with City officials on how the business community feels growth should be supported.

Shawnee is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. The Chamber will continue to support the Quality of Life issues related to code enforcement and beautification that makes our community more attractive to those who live here and our visitors. I am excited about the future of Shawnee and the resulting growth that will benefit our members and our community at large. Thank you for the opportunity to be your chairman.  I look forward to an exciting 2011.
